12 hours… TWELVE HOURS!!

I was on a bus for over 12 hours today… Leaving from Managua, Nicaragua (pretty scary town I must say.. or at least the bus station neighborhood) at 5am and getting into San Pedro Sula, Honduras like an hour ago (~5:30pm)… Thank god the bus was air conditioned and comfy or it would have been hell on wheels…

I checked into a nice hotel ($20) to treat myself after the bus ride and it’s really freaking nice when you compare it with all my other digs so far…

Yesterday in order to kill some Managua time I walked to this modern shopping mall and saw Elektra (no it wasn’t good.. but it kept me occupied for a couple hours)… I got popcorn and a soda (of course) but the popcorn ended up not sitting well with my stomach… I woke up after my 3 hours of sleep and I had an interesting morning… throwing up popcorn like 5 minutes before the bus left… which was not fun… even less fun was getting it on my shorts… But I suppose I should just be glad I didn’t throw up on the bus… ’cause that would have just been horrible…

Anyway… Tomorrow Marzena flies in and I’m gonna meet her at the airport and then we’re gonna hop a bus for the ancient Mayan ruins of Copan where we’ll spend her first 2 nights… I haven’t eaten anything today other than 4 Chips Ahoy cookies and so I really need to go eat something…

¡Hasta mas tarde!

¡La Playa!

After a few days chilling out in Granada, today I headed down to San Juan del Sur to get some beach time in… I found a little hotel with rooms with a/c, private bath (cold water… but who needs hot water anyway?) and cable tv for $13… which is a bit of a splurge in this country but I’m about due for a splurge… The hotel is 1/2 a block from the beach.. which is pretty but certainly not the most beautiful I’ve ever seen… the town is on a horseshoe-shaped cove with huge cliffs all around… It’s very reminiscent of Southern California’s coast… It’s a type of ecosystem called chaparral… (think Mediterranean)… kinda dry, with shrubby foliage… Heh… there’s one thing I learned in college…

So I’m here for a couple days before heading up into the gritty capital city of Managua on Thursday from where my 13 hour international bus ride originates on Friday… Saturday I meet up with Marzena in San Pedro Sula, Honduras for a week of fun…

So yes, I’m alive… very much so in fact… and tomorrow I get to spend a whole day baking in the sun!

Granada, Nica!

Yesterday I crossed the border into Nicaragua… a pleasant, though not quick, experience… I paid $10 for a bus directly from where I was in Costa Rica to the town I was headed for in Nicaragua so that the bus people deal with most of the immigration stuff… Waiting on line to get my exit stamp from Costa Rica took the longest… but entering Nicaragua wasn’t quick either… especially with all the fuss after this guy got pulled off the bus for smuggling cocaine…

I made a little map to show my progress so far:

That’s me where the red X is..  The red line is where I’ve been and the blue is where I’m headed in the next two months or so…

This is a really old colonial town and the architecture shows it… I’ve included a couple pictures I stole from the internet to illustrate what it looks like here… The hostel I’m staying at is in an old colonial mansion… with 2 courtyards, one with a leafy garden, the other with a little pool… It’s quite pretty here…
